Chorionic Villus Sampling

What it is

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal diagnostic test that examines a tiny sample of placental tissue, known as chorionic villi. Because this tissue shares the same genetic make-up as your baby, it can reliably check for chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome and for certain inherited genetic disorders.

One advantage of CVS is timing. It is usually performed between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, earlier than amniocentesis. This means results, and the reassurance or information they bring, are available sooner. The sample is taken under continuous ultrasound guidance, either through the cervix or through the abdominal wall, depending on the position of the placenta.

Who needs it

CVS is not routine. It is offered when there is a specific reason to look more closely at your baby's chromosomes or genes. Dr. Abeera Ali discusses whether the test is appropriate for you before anything is arranged. You may be a candidate if:

• A screening test (such as the combined first-trimester screen or NIPT) suggests an increased chance of a chromosomal condition.

• You are of advanced maternal age and wish to have a definite diagnosis.

What to expect

Before the procedure, you will have an ultrasound to confirm your dates and the placenta's location. The area is cleaned, the sample is collected in a few minutes under ultrasound guidance, and the villi are sent to the laboratory. Most women feel mild cramping or pressure rather than sharp pain.

Afterwards, you can rest and are advised to take things easy for a day or two. Spotting or mild cramping can occur and usually settles. Like any invasive prenatal test, CVS carries a small risk of miscarriage, which Dr. Abeera Ali explains clearly so you can give informed consent.
