How the ovulation calculator works

Ovulation is when an ovary releases an egg — the one time in your cycle you can conceive. In most cycles it happens about 14 days before your next period. Because the second half of the cycle (the luteal phase) stays fairly constant, the calculator counts back from your expected next period to estimate your ovulation day, then maps out the fertile days around it.

What is the fertile window?

Your fertile window spans roughly six days — the five days before ovulation and ovulation day itself. Sperm can survive in the body for up to five days, while the egg lives only 12–24 hours, so having intercourse in the two to three days before ovulation gives the best chance of conceiving.

Trying to conceive?

  • Aim for the fertile window, especially the two days before ovulation.
  • Take a folic-acid supplement before and during early pregnancy.
  • Track a few cycles — patterns make timing easier, especially if cycles are irregular.

If you have been trying for a while, or your cycles are irregular, fertility evaluation & treatment with Dr. Abeera Ali can help find the cause and the right next step. Book a consultation to get started.

Frequently asked questions

In a typical cycle, ovulation happens about 14 days before your next period starts — roughly the middle of a 28-day cycle. Because the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and your period) is fairly fixed at around 12–16 days, the calculator counts back from your expected next period to estimate your ovulation day.

Your fertile window is about six days long: the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. This is because sperm can survive up to 5 days, while the egg lives for only 12–24 hours. The two days just before ovulation are the most fertile.

It is a helpful guide for regular cycles, but it is an estimate based on averages. If your cycles are irregular — for example with PCOS — ovulation can be harder to predict. Ovulation predictor (LH) kits, basal body temperature tracking, or ultrasound follicle tracking with Dr. Abeera Ali give more precise timing.

No — the calendar method is not a reliable form of contraception, because ovulation can shift from cycle to cycle. If you want to prevent pregnancy, speak to Dr. Abeera Ali about safe, effective contraception options.

If you are under 35, see a specialist after 12 months of trying. If you are 35 or older, after 6 months. See a doctor sooner if you have irregular periods, PCOS, known fertility issues, or a history of miscarriage — early assessment makes a real difference.
